Marina Bay
Marina Bay, its dark glassy waters sparkling with polychromatic lights, its skyscrapers founded on land reclaimed from the sea, shows off Singapore at its most spectacular. Here nature meets engineering, and art meets science - self-consciously so within the walls of the ArtScience Museum, a beached turtle of a venue which hosts touring exhibitions from around the world. Above it soar the three towers of the Marina Bay Sands hotel, perhaps the most recognisable resident on the bay’s skyline, crowned with the world’s largest rooftop infinity pool. Throw in a DNA-inspired bridge, an enormous observation wheel and 101 hectares of seaside garden, and you’re looking at a memorable mélange indeed!
Take a turn through the Gardens by the Bay, Singapore’s best-loved attraction, where you can walk in the shade of shimmering Super Trees lit up by night like jewels, stand inside a home-made cloud, and boggle at flowers of a thousand colours in the world’s biggest greenhouse. Cross from Marina South to Marina Central along the prone helter-skelter of the Helix Bridge to catch a show or learn a craft at the Esplanade Theatre. The Singapore Flyer, one of the largest observation wheels on the planet, tops out its rival the London Eye by 30m (98ft) and offers angel’s-eye views across the bay and the city: watching the sunset from one of the barrel-shaped glass gondolas is a particular treat. And if you’re up for a bit of five-star luxury, a night at the Marina Bay Sands will give you access to the much-raved-about infinity pool, 150m (492ft) long and cunningly engineered to give the illusion that its waters are lapping against the phalanx of skyscrapers beyond.
